Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of environmental communication intervention and communicator credibility on community waste management behavior, as well as to formulate a grassroots community-based environmental communication model in Gorontalo City. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with a triangulation design, integrating quantitative data from 100 respondents analyzed via multiple linear regression with qualitative data gathered from FGD with nine key informants. The findings indicate that communicator credibility and community participation partially have a positive and significant effect on waste management behavior, whereas environmental communication intervention partially shows no significant effect. This lack of partial significance is attributed to information disparity, specifically benefit disparity and geographic disparity. However, both variables simultaneously exert a significant effect. As an academic novelty, this study establishes the model from SBCC theory, demonstrating that grassroots environmental communication requires the community to act as a boundary spanner. This role integrates waste-to-value messaging, socio-religious approaches through majelis taklim, family-based education, and multi-actor diplomacy with local government and the private sector to foster sustainable waste management practices.
